anyone know where I can find new y pipe without pre cats for 1989 with auto trans. I cant seem to find sourse. I am replacing with new main cat and dont want pre cats.
The older c4 y pipe does not have the correct connection to attatch to cat.
Mid-America, Eckler's, Central Corvette use to sell this type of Y-pipe, from exhaust manifold to a Cat. that slides into the Y-pipe were the 2 pipes are wielded together at the end. I bought one 15 years ago so I hope this helps.
I don't want to pay for new converter. I have one already I just want y pipes
I was in the same boat. I did purchase the flowmaster assembly because the Y-pipe was stainless w/ mandrel bends - the mandrel thing was my key requirement. mandrel bends might be overkill, but then again, I'm a bit **** - . I did have a magnaflow super hi-flow (main) cat, so I ended up with an extra main cat. my plans are to sell the flowmaster cat and recoup some of my purchase price. I can tell you, the flowmaster Y-pipe is a quality product.
Any competent muffler shop can build a Y-pipe with the proper connections for both the exhaust manifolds and main cat. IIRC, the front of the OEM cat is a slip-fit to the Y-pipe; the rear connection has a 2-bolt flange.
Not wanting the pre-cats might be an issue with a muffler shop. If the pre-cats are on the car now, some shops won't leave them off. Removal of working cats by a shop can bring a federal fine in the 5-figure range. So ask first!! Otherwise it's simple job for a shop to bend each side to fit, install a O2 sensor bung, and build a Y-flange to connect everything together.

w/you on the competent shop thing, but with labor rates being what they are, the price of stainless, and the welding thing, I'm not sure any cost savings can be had here. FWIW, I paid $210 (shipped) for the flowmaster system, and I'm hope to sell the new, flowmaster main cat for $50-$75. that should get the net cost of my system in the one-fifty range. I could be wrong here, but I doubt anyone could get a similar Y-pipe, with the same quality, at their local muffler shop for $150. I'm pretty sure you're dead right on any shop removing the pre-cats thing though. just my 2-cents....
