Default "sys" error- chip related?

Hi guys. I've been working on the car off and on over the past year. Basically, the old data on the chip got corrupted and the engine temp/enrichment factor was way off. It would cause the car to run crazy rich once warm to the point that it would die.

I just re burned the chip using my original files. The car won't start and I am seeing "sys" on the dash. I can't even run it to run datamaster to see what's going on.

Anyone have any ideas on trouble shooting this?

here's some specs
383 lt4
moates ecu prom adapter
tunercat software
40 psi fuel at the rail
good battery voltage
verified the chip is in the correct direction (with the dimple on the chip away from the silver handle on the moates adapter)

I always thought a "SYS" display was a quick reference to generally a battery problem. It's certainly not an ECM related error I'm quite sure.

I believe I've seen people mentioning just disconnecting battery for a short "rest" will make it go away also.

Try the paperclip method for pulling error codes:

What they mean:

I had "Sys Err" when I forgot to put the prom back in the ECM and tried to start it. This was on a 1991.

I have the same sys error when I don't have a prom in my 91,also got the same after reprogramming a prom and putting it on. I think it has to do with the prom either being corrupted or programmed wrong so it goes into a limp mode.

I'm getting error code 41 which I believe is failure to communicate between the ECM and ccm. After researching, it sounds like it could be chip related or it could be tough to diagnose based on the other threads I saw.

I believe I did try to re bun the file once but will try again since it's the easiest fix.

I did start another thread about the situation recently.

It's definitely the chip when the fans run like that and you get sys and other error codes.

On the chip burner I have the socket handle is near the #1 pin. The dot on the chip should be towards the handle as the dot indicates which end #1 is at. Seems like you may have had the chip backwards in the burner.....did you get a chip program complete message after you burned the chip? Did you try to read the chip after burning it?

thanks for the response. In the burner, I have the dimple on the chip facing the handle. In the car, I have it facing away from the handle on the moates interface.

I did check the chip and it was burned correctly or so tunerpro says.

I did have a problem not too long ago (last time the car drove at all) where the power would cut out entirely. No dome lights, headlights, dash light, nothing. 100% dead. I replaced the battery, and 2 main ground wires and I'm at least getting the car to crank regularly. Here is the thread on that:

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...und-issue.html

Any chance the two are related? I'll have to double check, but I think I recall seeing wires getting grounded out when pinched causing the whole system to shut down. My new battery to block ground is pretty tight so I could see that happening. I'm thinking out loud now; I need to get a flashlight and start prodding around new the ground wires.

Code 41 can be set from not plugging the chip adapter together with the memcal correctly. Both large chips of equal size must be justified to the same end. Also, the memcal must be from a v8 TPI car or it will set the code.

Did you check the side battery terminals for corrosion? I had replaced my terminal screw in studs last fall and I drive the car to work as my daily driver.....the salt spray corroded one of the terminals so bad my car died on the highway on the way home one night and I needed to get A flat bed tow. Turned out the one stud was badly corroded.

I changed the battery, both the big and small ground wire and the studs that screw into the battery. Even my old battery was a year or so old and the car hasn't been in rain for at least 5 years. It's a garage queen in California.

Sounds like the problem started when you reprogrammed the chip though, correct?

Too bad you don't know someone with a known good PCM to swap in so you can eliminate that as the issue.

The sys error isn't just from a corrupt/missing chip, I have a good running tune on my car and it still displays the sys error, I also replaced the battery but it still flashes. If anyone has any ideas let me know

I checked and double checked the tune. I haven't had any time to work in the car but hopefully this weekend I'll be able to check it out.

Definitely post up if you get a chance this weekend...sub'd to see how this plays out too.

Not to hijack, but I lived in Lake Forest when I was a kid!

Rancho Cañada, then Serrano until we moved...in those days, very few people called it Lake Forest and everyone just called it all El Toro.

The Sun and Sail Club is where I spent almost every waking moment...not sure if that's even still around, but those were great days.

Small world, sometimes.

Small world! I'm over in Serrano Ridge. I'm posting off my phone but where are you out of now? There are actually quite a few c4's in this neighborhood although most are parked.
