Are these chips better than the ADS chip and hypertech chips of the 90's? I know you guys will say get a dyno tuned chip. But not to many people do that. Is there a good mail order chip? Or are they all the same? I just saw this add maybe since the new chips for diesel pickups give you more power maybe they finally made a decent one for an old C4.
Save your money and spend it on a good tune up, plugs, wires, rotor and cap.
I swallowed the advertising hype when I bought my 85 (before finding out about this Forum) and purchased the Hypertech chip. For the next couple of years I had an issue with "ping". I changed fuel brands, added octane boost, changed timing....just about everything you can do. When I finally had a dyno tune, the tuner found that the chip was advancing the timing and SUBTRACTING FUEL! There was the cause of the "ping".
If your running a mostly stock L98, stay with the stock chip. The only thing most of these off the shelf chips do is alter the temperature the fans turn on. You will not ever get the 50 additional horses. The dyno tuned chip will nurse out a little more performance from a stock setup, but your only talking 10-15 HP and some better fuel economy. The stock chip will handle just about all modifications until you change the cam.
