I've had an intermittent hard starting on an 89 C4. Sine the fuel pump had 115000 on it i thought it might be the problem. I replaced it today and it cranked right up. I let it idle a few minutes then killed it to move the vehicle behind it so i could take it for a test drive. When i got back in it a few minutes later it would crank but not fire. I pulled a plug wire off and it will jump a bright blue spark to the plug. Any ideas on what to check next? Where is the fuel pump relay and how should it be checked?
If you have fuel pressure and spark then you need to determine if the injectors are being pulsed. You can unplug one injector and put a small 12v lamp across the connector and crank the engine and see the lamp pulse. Use your timing light to determine if the spark occurs at the right time.
Update. The car sat overnight and started right up this morning. I drove it about 5 miles and it ran and idled good. When i killed it and tried restarting several times within a few seconds and it started right up. I let it sit about 10 minutes and it cranked but not start.
I recently went through the same situation; Then I thought why not read the directions! The 90 shop manual under "Will not Start", gives a list of things to check. Check the ohms reading on each injector, I did this and found three with ohms reading at 5 or 6 and one with 3. The injector driver must see this as a short or open and shuts down the pulse for the entire injection system. Like the Christmas tree light bulbs when I was a kid one bulb burns out and the entire strand goes out. The injectors should read 12 to 16 ohms. I left the injector harness off the really bad injector the car started and I drove it home. I have now changed all the injectors to Ford SVO 24# and love it, see my other post. Hope this helps, yell if you need additional.
Bill :) :)
I changed the injectors out with accel about 15 monmths ago and 8000 miles./ Could the accel injectors already be bad. It ran great until about 2 tanks of gas ago. It just set for about 10 hours and it started right up.
