Default Heater Core

I have read a lot of the posts about replacing the heater core. I have a question. Is there something in the design that causes them to leak? I can honestly say I have never owned a car with a leaking heater core. Just sold my 72 Chevelle last year and it had the original heater core. So far my 95 Corvette has been good. No leaks...yet.

It must be something to do with the 220-240F temperature that these cars run at for better emissions, the constant pressure cycles takes its toll. Not to mention corrosion if the coolant is not replaced regularly.

I have had my 85 for 20 years, i replaced the heater core with a new one 15 years ago and is still good.

They are a real pain to replace though..

I've had a lot of 30+ year old cars and I can tell you that you're just lucky. They are a common failure, especially when the coolant isn't changed regularly.

They are also never fun to change. Did my '68 Firebird last year. I swear they hung it in mid air and built the car around it :-)
