Bose speaker bizarre noise.
Last night my passenger side rear Delco/Bose Gold speaker went haywire.....I actually thought I had blown a tire......this hideously loud thumping (thump-thump-thump almost like a helicopter sound) was coming from the passenger rear side.....like I said I thought it was a blowout but the car was steering fine....so I cut the radio off and it stopped......cut it backon and thump-thump-thump.....really loud...
Doesn't sound like a blown speaker to me.....in fact the radio was on very low when it happened (the wife was in the car with me  )
Has anybody else had this happen? How did you solve it?
BTW Yes I realize it is an 11 year old system and even new was already out of date...but I just bought the car....so I would hate to have to go spend $1000 on a new sound system for the car :smash:

Sounds like the speaker amp has just failed. Very common as the system gets older.
There is a Tech Tip on the forum for repairing these things. Didn't work for me though, and ended up sending the bad unit to Dr. Don's for repair. He will fix it for about $60 or so. I understand that Bose also repairs the the things.

I, and several others on the forum, will tell you that you're best off just replacing the system. You can get a nice system that sounds much better than the Bose for well under $1000. Look around local stores (Best Buy usually has good deals) and online - you could put together a decent sound system for around $300.

Yesterday I had the Bose playing in the car w/ top down as it wsa parked in garage..was messing around in garage. Heard an incessant buzzing noise under the music and thought, "Oh boy, there goes my Bose...damn." Turned out to be neighbor was running his weed eater next door
Whew! Close call!

Bad amp. They ususally all blow after 10 years or so. Fixing it is an option but remember, you will probably need to fix all of them soon enough. And the sound isn't great to start with. I'd save the money and use it toward a good aftermarket system instead.
Mine was making noises, I tried the first tech tip, no luck, I tried the second tip and changed all the caps on the card, that fixed it
so far anyway. If you can solder you are looking at about $6 total.

There is a large valued electrolytic capacitor on the 12v line that is the best candidate for causing your motorboating. Considering the age , replacing all the electrolytic capacitors is not very expensive and will very likely fix your amplifier. It is a heck of a lot cheaper than $1000 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Bose amps can make a variety of noises. Having repaired all four amps on my 90, recommend jfb's fix. Fix one, the others will likely demand equal attention. And yes, they can flat howl, even with the volume set to the lowest setting. It's an electrical thingk as in hiss, pop, howl, buzz, squell, and I've heard the "thump". Let us know if you need some details on getting the fronts out.
