Default service engine light

I just got done a cam swap. Initially, everything was fine. Now I have a service engine light and a rough idle. Its acting like a misfire spark plug or injector. Like its only running on 7. Anyway, how do I read the codes? Its a 96 which has OBDII.

Thanks

Autozone should be able to scan the codes for free.

It was fine until I changed the fuel filter. I wonder how that might have messed something up.

Maybe you didn't install it in the correct direction? Regardless, it could be coincidence.

I'm pretty sure I had the arrow on the filter pointing in the direction of flow, but Ill check.

I put Bosch plugs in. Maybe thats my problem.

I have never used a spark plug with 4 ground straps on a cammed engine. However, I did read that it was not recommended to use them. If I were you, I would stick with the stock AC delco plugs. That way it rules out the plugs being a problem.

You may have chosen a heat range that was too cold for your engine.

Im going to change the plugs. What are recommend for the cammed up LT1?

I'll change the wires too. They have some whitish deposits in various places suggesting they might be arching. The thing is, they were not misfiring prior to the cam swap. Maybe these Bosch plugs have a higher resistance and now the marginal ignition wires are acting up.

First of all, I'm a dumb ***!

I had #'s 4 and 6 ignition wires backwards at the dist cap. I'm surprised it wasn't popping or backfiring and I though the rougher idle was due to the bigger cam. Anyway, all good now.

I thought about mentioning that. But you said it happened after you changed the filter, which is why I didn't.

Glad you figured it out though. Enjoy the car!

Luckily it was two on the passenger side that were wrong. It was pretty easy to see and correct that. Had it been the drivers side, it would have been harder.

When you have two wires crossed like that the spark comes at the wrong time and those cylinders don't fire. You're running on 6 cylinders. That's why it runs rough. If you pulled the plugs you would find those two wet with fuel because it's not being burned.
