Every morning when i start her up i hear a horrible sound comming from the engine... Sounds alot like the klick/klank noise you typically hear from a diesel engine. It goes on for about 30 seconds and then dissapears....
It started about 3 days after an oil change - i put in 10w-50 synthetic ( they were all out of 5w-30)
What can make such a sound? - what do i need to check and how? - will such a small increase of weight in oil affect my engine?
Re: Engine knocks on cold start - Help (Daniel DK)
Well, first thing that comes to mind is a lifter that has collapsed during the night. I got the sound too just a couple of days after my top end rebuild. Just to be sure we readjusted the rockers. The sound has not reappeared...knock on wood. ;)
Check:
1. oil pressure?
2. enough oil?
3. too much oil?
4. dirt in oil?
5. correct oil? (this one you know ;) )
6. rockers adjusted correctly?, not an issue if your engine has not been opened
For a few days I was very nervous because I've heard that a main/rod bearing that is about to go can make similar sound. Luckily it wasn't that.
Hope I don't scare you too much. It could be just the oil being too thick. If I were you I would change the oil once more to a thinner variety and observe what happens. I've used 5W-50 (also problem finding thinner Mobil 1) for a 3750 miles but I am changing 5W-40 in there tomorrow.

Sounds alittle like a lifter. My truck did the same thing when I changed oils. Still trying to figure out what weight they were using when I bought it. If I were you, I'd go back to the weight you were using and see if it goes away. :seeya ............Just as a thought, whats the temperature there? 10W-50 is aweful thick for colder climates. IF it well very warm it wouldn't be as much of a problem but if not it would have to warm up the oil before it could get it through the engine. I would change the oil before driving it and doing dammage to that engine. :yesnod:
