OBD1 Scanner
1992 with OBD1(of course)here and thinking about buying a code scanner but would also like one that does more than just make the engine light blink. Something that would display a number code and delete codes. Maybe one that does OBD2 also. I found the Actron CP9190 but it's kinda pricey. Anything out there like that for a few hundred dollars or less?

As with our vintage of cars there are also vintage quality scanners.
Back in the day - the Snap-on MT2500 bi-directional scanner would cost someone several thousand dollars.
Today - you will find several in the $200 range.

I went with the 9190 eventually on my 94, I tried the Tunerpro setup but not being really I.T minded found it difficult to use, the Actron is expensive but it's solved a lot of issues for me in the past being simple to use, and in that it's saved me a LOT of money, so it's probably safe to say it's already paid for it's self

To make any program changes like fan on/off temps, you will need to burn a chip. Not hard to do but requires some special hardware and research. Read thru the info on moates.net site for an overview. Lots of hardware options out there depending on your budget. Your need a G1 chip adapter and chip, an ALDL cable and eeprom programmer. Fun to do and tinker witwithh, but overkill if you just want to change fans.

I've been looking at the Actron 9690 which provides real-time data monitoring for my '88.
I can use a paper clip to pull codes; I need/want a stand-alone scanner that will record real-time engine data for OBD-1 as well as OBD-2.

Deciding if it is really necessary for the engine to work quantifiably better or psychologically better? If you gain a half HP, is it worth the effort? Now if you are doing something else, it might be a "While I am there" deal with the dyno tuning guy.

It should be a new thread .....but why do you need just to change fan on temp? Thermostat can lower operating temp other than in stop and go traffic. Hypertech thermomaster chip which recommends lower thermostat will lower fan on speed...fan seems to run all the time when outside temp is over 80 degrees.

If you just want he fans to come on sooner and assuming like most C-4s a heating problem . I have a 93 and went with a Hypertech power chip and a Hypertech 160% stat ,fans come on at 160% and the chip gives it a little pep. E-bay has them new for I gave $100.00 for mine ..

fan relay & thermostat kit, seems to be a quick and easy mod, tstat installs on the block, cut into the fan wiring and run it to this instead bypass the computer

Back to the scanner issue: I have an Actron CP9145 that I have used for awhile on alot of cars and it works quite well. Actron makes a cable for this scanner that can specifically used with the GM 12 pin OBD1 that my '85 Vette has. Has anyone used this setup and will it give real time data? I bought a generic OBD1 adapter cable that connects to the OBD2 scanner connection and that does not work at all. Any thoughts?

Finally I bought the AutoXray AX7000; hooked it up to my '88 Vette today and it recorded all available engine parameters both while idling and during a short test drive while chasing a recent uneven power issue.
I paid a little $301 (w/ 3yr warrantee) on e-bay; it came in the case with cables, lighter power adapter and Quick Reference Manal.

I have a 95 lt1 and need a scanner for obd1 with the 16 pin plug instead of the 12 pin. I just ordered one that does both obd1 & 2 with all the connectors. the site is" aliexpress.com. cost is under $90. they are out of stock right now but should have some in within 14 days. hope it works as advertised. good luck.
