tonight i'm pulling my ZF so i'll be able to get the shortblock out & drop in my new engine {see sig} is there anything i should be aware of that's not right infront of me simple? i was looking the job over last night and it seems really straight forward. i could have swore someone mentioned something about a 12mm allen and the input shaft something something & a couple other things, also it is nessasary to drop the zf before i pull the engine correct?
Re: pulling ZF6 tonight, any pointers i should know? (gtsyellow)
12mm allen is for the clutch fork pivot attachement to the bellhousing - there's a small cover that you take off with a (smaller) allen, and the the 12mm for the pivot - clockwise to remove. If you're leaving the bell housing attached of course that can stay... can't say if you need to pull the housing or not - my experience is from doing the clutch, not pulling the engine.
18mm & 21MM for the driveline beam. http://www.zfdoc.com has a list of steps on it I believe as well.
have the hoist on the engine, or a jack under to pan as the engine will want to tilt back as you free up the tranny. Breakng sensors at the backis bad :)

Been here in this territory a few times....
Once the shifter **** is removed, put the trans into 3rd gear. Do yourself a favor and go to Harbor Freight and get a transmission jack, 'cause that ZF is around 170 lbs. With trans jack under (of course) the trans, use another jack on the bellhousing (with a block of wood between it and the jack). Tilt the entire assembly down slowly until the shifter clears the hole in the tunnel. Remove bolts holding trans to bellhousing, work out of the bellhousing and lower trans.
You'll really like having the trans jack to install that thing. I tried it once....swore I'd never be without a trans jack again. Getting that SOB lined up while holding it in place is impossible, and if you try using a floor jack you still can't get the input shaft stabbed very easily.
With the trans jack I got mine stabbed and bolted down in 15 minutes... and I tried for 2 1/2 hours without the trans jack.

went VERY easy, i'm amaized how smooth & easy droping that was to be honest. jeffvette and i pulled the entire transmission out in about 2hrs with a break inbetween for a pizza & pepsi's

If the Pepsi's tasted like barly and hopps, you might want to double check your work. :jester
Good job guys. Why are we paying dealers the big bucks to do this when it can be done yourselfs?

i have no idea, basically all you do is this, drop the exhaust, unbolt the support beam from the rear end to the transmission. this is a bit tricky as you have to position a box end wrench on top holding the nuts while you use a ratchet on the bolt end. small hands and good balance really come in handy here. once you free up the support beam you can pull the 4 spicer bolts holding in the drive shaft. after this the clutch slave cylinder...it has a whopping 2 nuts holding it. the transmission it's self is held in by 5 bolts, once those are out we used a jack and supported the transmission then walked it back and wrestled it out. it came out very smooth & the only tricky part was keeping a 150ish lb transmission balanced on a floor jack. other than taking the shifter apart in the interior that's basically all there is to it.
