Re: Finally getting a garage...what floor jack? (MinnesotaWhite)
The craftsman 3 ton works great for me.. Got 4 stands and a creeper with it for around 120 dollars totall. I don't understand the book thing on a C4 though unless he's lowered the car  I probably have 5 inches to spare on the jack points with mine..
Nice interior by the way

I also put a urethane spacer. But I had to take my front wheels off of the front of the jack and manufacture a roller to obtain an additional inch of clearance.

the craftsman is probably the best deal going for the $, to get something really better you'll spend 3x as much. when you get close to $300 you have lincons and some aluminum jacks that are much easier to scoot around. what do i have? well i have a harbor freight cheapo
Re: Finally getting a garage...what floor jack? (gtsyellow)
Don't worry about all that stuff...having a two car garage means all the crap you want to store will be there and just enough space for the car to park...maybe.
If you are lucky enough not to turn your garage into a storage bin for a pack rat, the puck on the jack and the 4 jack stands are the trick.
Congrats on the home...gotta luv those intrest rates...huh!?!?!?

Never been much of a pack rat really...I take the Penske view to my home/garage :D
Hockey puck? Well considering I'm originally from Canada...I have a few of those laying around :)
I've been dying to tackle a few things on the Vette...and just never had a place to do it...now that I'll have the garage...a floor jack is a natural (along with a compressor).
Re: Finally getting a garage...what floor jack? (MinnesotaWhite)
craftsman 3 ton for me too. used to use a cheaper craftsman 2 1/4 ton but it didn't have the lift height to get it on the jackstands.
another great investment is a good set of ramps. i bought rhino ramps for i think around 30 bucks at autozone. i use them to lift the front end before getting in there with the jack.
congrats on your new house! hope you enjoy years of collecting stuff you will probably never use.
Re: Finally getting a garage...what floor jack? (STL94LT1)
I have a Craftsman 3 ton but I removed the puck and use the flat surface to lift the car. It barely fits under the car. Some more lowered cars I have had to use a smaller jack to lift it a little in order to get the larger jack under it.

I don't think I have 5 inches total! You must have a 4x4 version!
Re: Finally getting a garage...what floor jack? (MinnesotaWhite)
I ran down to Northern Hydraulics in Burnsville and got a nice unit for around $80 They seemed to have a pretty big selection of jacks to look at. I think that mine was a 2 1/2 ton unit.
Re: Finally getting a garage...what floor jack? (bob_ev)
Something to keep in mind about floor jacks is how high you have to lift the handle before it will start pumping. I have had cheap ones that you have to get the handle up about 45 degrees from the floor before it lets the hydraulic mechanism see fluid in the bore (and consequently pump). I have an old craftsman 2 ton where you only have to lift the end of the handle about 12 inches off the floor. I can sneak it under the center of my 89 front crossmember, angle the handle next to a front wheel, and get it to pump. Whole front end up in the air without moving the jack. Oh yeah, the pad is only about 3 inches off the floor too.
Someone mentioned air compressors. I'd spend $400 dollars and get the craftsman small 175 psi max unit. I think its even 110 volt. I have a 30+ year old craftsman 150PSI max, 20 gallon tank one (220V) that can't quite keep up with some of the more agressive air tools.

Whatever you get buy it local, don't order it through Harbor Frieght, Summit, etc..
I bought one through a mail order once and it's a POS. The handle sticks every time & takes forver to pump up.
Go try them out at the store first hand and save on the shipping.
