I need to replace my clutch slave cylinder, which appears to be leaking into the bellhousing. I'm getting a slow drip at the bottom of the bellhousing where it meets up with the tranny. The master cylinder doesn’t show any sign of leaking, either under the hood or under the dash.
Do I need to replace both cylinders at the same time or can I get by with just doing the slave? The car has 79,000 miles and both appear to be original.
Replace them both. What you will find is that if fluid has been leaking out of clave or master, then contaminants have entered the fluid, which often hurts the seal on the other cylinder.
The slave on my '95 went at 30k. Replaced just the slave, bled the system
well (the fluid was quite dark, probably from failed seal contamination).
45k now, no problems. Just a data point.
