My check engine light has come on (Code 32) the last 2 times I've driven my car. I have a few questions.
Is it a coincidence that I had my AC on each time, and I've been on the Highway each time its come on.
Is this a reaction due to my MAF screans being cut, & temp/load?
Does a malfunctioning EGR cause a lack in performance?
Re: Code 32 (EGR Valve)...Does it effect performance? (Triple Black 88)
A gutted MAF shouldn't have anything to do with it. Code 32 will set if a certain number of parameters are met after a certain amount of time so sometimes it appears as an intermittent problem. The EGR should be closed at idle and full throttle. IF your EGR is stuck partially open at full throttle, then yes, your performance WILL suffer (not sure how much though) because hot exhaust gas is being directed into your intake. Hot air with most of the oxygen burnt out of it is not what helps your engine make optimum power.
Re: Code 32 (EGR Valve)...Does it effect performance? (Triple Black 88)
I had a code 32. The "Check Engine" light wouldn't come on until the engine sustained a steady rpm above 1500 like on the freeway. Usually it would come on in 15-20 minutes at this rpm.
I took it to Connell Chevorlet in Costa Mesa, CA, told them it showed a code 32 and they couldn't find anything. Then I looked in the Mid-America catalog and I noticed on page #146 of catalog F11Z next to a replacement EGR switch it said, "The most common cure for code 32". So I ordered and installed it. No more "check engine" light.
Maybe reading the Mid-America catalog should be required reading for Chevy mechanics.
Since then I have plugged the EGR pipe with a sholder bolt I found that just fit in the pipe on the exhaust side. Then I took off that UGLY pipe shield that never quite looked like it belonged. Then I pulled the vac line to the EGR and plugged the line.
Thanks for the replies. Jim, sounds like plugging that pipe is a good idea. I saw the EGR switch that you mentioned, and it looks familiar. The top cone shaped piece that holds the wire always comes loose. I noticed mine was, so that could be it. I'll play around with it this weekend.

i hada code32 on my 87 vert. turned out it was the 12 dollar part that threaded into the EGR pipe (heat switch) PLUS it was really detonating under load with premium gas,jst for a few seconds until knock sensor sensed it(caused by vacuum hose broken by thermostat housing) runs great now.
