I am in the process of swapping my 2.59 for 3.54 and need alittle help. I have everything removed down to the half shafts and just can't seem to get them disengaged from the rear end. I have removed the spider straps from the u-joints connected to the yokes and tried pulling out on the spindles as the manual says but it just won't move. What am I missing here? Do I have to remove the half shafts totally to get the rear end out? Everything else come out really easy which is a reall surprise, even the rusty exhaust. I'm sure alot of people here have done this swap, so please send me some advice before I go crazy!!!!!!
I found that unless you remove the toe rods, you will have a hard time getting the spindle assembly to pull out far enough to get the half shaft loose.
One thing you can try, a screwdriver/prybar between the u-joint and the yoke, not the end of the joint, but at the cross. Apply pressure to break the joint loose from the yoke.
Lastly, you can lower the diff with ths shafts still connected, and get more clearance and get them loose.
Re: Help needed with rear diff. removal. (tommelton)
I disconnected and removed the driveshaft, took the C-beam off at the front (left it attached at the rear), removed the e-brake cables, removed the brake calipers and hung them up, disconnected the dog bones and batwing from the frame and then dropped the whole rear end onto a floor jack as one large assy. Then took it apart out in the open.

That's what the FSM says is needed. I did just that and the half shafts came right out, with a little prying by my BFS (big f'ing screwdriver).
