Default Electric water pump relay question

What wire should I use to switch the relay going to my electric water pump? I want one that is only live while the engine is actually running right?

Thanks!

Depends on what you want to do with the car. I plan on wiring mine up so that the water pump comes on when the key is in accessory mode (doing my electric pump next weekend). This way, at the track, I can cool my engine without it running.

I just want it to work the way the stock one does, just running while the engine is running, if i ever want track cooling i will just jump a switch around the relay and turn it on manually.

There is an electric water pump install on an LT1 (fbody). Wiring should be the same. Basicaly he hooked up a relay from the pump to the battery. But he only wanted the pump on when the key was in the ign position, so he attached the relay switch to the fan line.

I am not sure you can wire it to only be on when the engine is actually running versus when the key is in the run position. Mine comes on when I have the key in the run position. I just unplug the pump if I need to leave the car in the run position to check codes or the like so the battery doesn't run down. I have thought about making a bypas switch to let me turn the pump off when I want, but am still thinking on that one.

Problem with doing it that way is that the fans are not always on. I'm not sure on F-Bodies, but on my '96, each fan is programmed to come on when the engine reaches a given temp. You don't want do that with the water pump because you won't be circulating any coolant when the fan is off.

Using the fan POWER wire should work fine! This is the wire that feeds the fan relay, not the ground (from ecm) or switched lead to the fan.

He should use a fuse on the power lead to the pump relay.

Personally I would set it up so that grounding the pump relay caused the pump to run. Then use the fan relay power wire to activate another small relay to ground the pump relay. It would then be easy and safe to install a manual override switch to run the pump anytime, yet never worry about it not running when it needs to.

Pump relay should be rated for at least 20A inductive load. Think a good sized fan relay would work well. The grounding relay could be just about anything of decent quality and sealed well.
