Default LT1 tach question

I'm thinking of doing an LT4 conversion to my LT1. Lingenfelter advertises $299 to change the tach to 8000 rpm. Seems like alot of money. Will the stock tach register above the top mark at 6000rpm? It looks like the edge of the bezel would be about 6500 rpm. I don't intend to go above that.

Keep in mind that our tachs are off by as little as 200 rpm to as much as 500 rpm on purpose. GM did this to keep us guys from pushing it too far.

I regularly push mine past 6000 before the rev limiter kicks in.
I'm guessing mine is off by about 200 rpm.

I have bounced mine off the speedo when I had the solid roller cam in the motor. I generally run it a bit past 6K on the tach. Mine is off by 2-300 like Franks'. I use the shift light to tell me when I go far enough ;).

They're intentionally inaccurate?!? - always on the high side I guess... Is this true? Why the heck would you do that? You've already got a rev limiter and the resolution is so crappy on the gauge (lack of needle movement and markings) that you'd think it'd at least be accurate. You really have to wonder about GM sometimes. :smash:

Thanks for the info, a shift light seems like the way to go. Who sells them?
