Not everybody "does something different to make them come on sooner." Your vette was designed and tested by some reasonably bright people, so the fans activate as engineered. With engine modifications, some tuners program the fans to activate at a lower temp to reduce engine temps.

If interested, you might read through this article to understand LT1 cooling (not the L98):

Literally just found that on the forum was reading it the 93 isn't as bad as the 87 the 87 gets pinging and such when it gets warm(dont like that in town) highway they are fine I do run the best fuel with the highest octane I can buy from stations that use it regularly. I do know a fellow in town that can tune these cars I think but wants 300ish per car

Without scientific measuring of performance, I have never noticed any difference in operation in any of my LT1s when using regular or premium octane.

This far the l98 in my 87 is the worst it notices the lower octane especially when it gets warmer that's why I'm looking at Trying to find somthing that will help it run cooler

Both cars are seeing up to 235 but the 87l98 is pinging when it gets above 215 so I'd like them both to run around 200 (93 is dads car and he wants it to run cooler just doesn't like it being that hot)

Seems like the fans are not activating at the lower temp, even though you mention in post #1 they are....LT1 @ 228 primary, and 238 secondary. Primary fan should reduce the temp from 228 to about 217 easily.

Re the L98 pinging...may help:

What octane gas are you using? The Chevron 94 octane with no ethanol? Or just "normal" premium?

A premium gas with something like 91 octane should keep the L98 engine from any pinging without regard to outside air temps or even coolant temps. You may want to check the timing and set it to factory specs (6 degrees BTDC with the tan EST wire disconnected).

Does your '87 have the auxiliary cooling fan located in front of the intake area? It's controlled by the temp sensor in the driver's side cylinder head. Ground that green wire and the fan should run.

My slightly modded '87 still has the OEM chip and with the 92 octane premium in my area, I have never heard any pinging even having done track days with air temps approaching 100 degrees.

One issue with C4's and cooling is a reduction of the airflow through the A/C condenser and radiator due to dirt and debris that collects on those items. If you haven't done so, clean out any dirt and debris. You can use a vacuum from the front and in between the radiator and condenser. Then use a garden hose from the engine side to push out any remaining stuff.

It can't hurt to do a cooling system service and consider replacing the upper and lower radiator hoses. It's possible that a lower hose is collapsing and causing a reduction in coolant flow. Use a good ethlyene glycol (green) coolant in the '87 and '932 using a 50-50 mix with distilled water. That percentage will provide a 250+ degree boiling point. The LT1 will run at a higher temp than the '87 as the LT1 cooling system was designed to run hotter in order to reduce emissions.

Thanks for the tip I use chevron 94 currently the pinging is mostly when you are "lugging" it a bit when its above 215 when its down at 215 or lower its fine it cools right off when the fans run but it just seems mighty hot before they kick in. Seems my pinging is temp related next tank I'll try some shell gold no ethanol and see if that changes anything highway cruising temps are normal fans don't come on often but in town she's warm

So are you saying its running 230+ while going down the road? If so, that's too hot. At idle it'll get up there.

It cools down once the fans come on but It does drive there and come back only in town. Highway the car is flawless and float around 200 where I would like it to run all the time :p so I seen in a catalogue some kits and such that make the fan come on sooner or what other options have people done. We have a trip coming up and are heading to one of the hottest parts of the province and I dont want any issues and neither does my paps with his lt1

run a grounded switch to the black/green wire off the relay to the fan...then you can turn them on when you want....

If you turn on the A/C both fans will turn on. Sometimes in traffic I have the A/C on.

You can set the 87's max advance and base timing. Yours is probably set to high which is causing the pinging.

That is a good article; I remember reading a shorter similar article in the '90's when the LT1 first came out.

If the reverse flow cooling is so good at doing what its claims are then why don't the LS engines use this system?

just curious

Your knock sensor could be weak. The KS was weak on my 91 and it had the same problem. I installed one from a 94 lt1 I had and no more ping/knock. Good luck!
