Default 1996 Speedometer & Info Center Issues

My 1996 Speedometer has done some intermittent things. Sometimes the display is 'chinese' when if first lights but starts working fine after 1 to 5 minutes. Lately it was working fine and then locked at a speed even tho we were changing speeds. The speed shown would change for no reason and stopping/restarting didn't change anything. After about 45 minutes it began working fine. Knock on wood it has worked fine since. During the non working periods the Info Center buttons did not work either. If I pushed Gauges or Fuel a digital reading might show up immediately or 5 minutes later. I assume there is a connector or a ground problem somewhere. All other cluster gauges and systems work fine - Tach, speed control, all car lights, idiot lights etc. Before I bought the car the front 'hood' had been removed and painted so possibly some connection has been poorly reconnected but I am unable to find it. Appreciate suggestions on where to start looking. Hoping the fact both the Speedo Digital display and the Info Button not working offer a more specific starting point. Thanks.

My 96 was doing the same thing - you need to pull the dash and reseat the cable connection between the PC board and the LED display - this is not difficult but be very very careful because that piece of glass is expensive - pulling the dash requires that you drop the steering column

THANKS. Are you referring to the LCD pins at the top where they plug into the cluster PC board? This requires disassembling the cluster assembly to get to the LCD glass. Or the larger plug towards the passenger side of the cluster ? Any tricks I need to know to remove the instrument cluster ?

there are a couple of little screws that hold the bezel in place... they are TIGHT.

I used a screw driver bit, that fit in a socket, and a ratchet...

otherwise, tread lightly and break nothing.

I am referring to the pin connector that the LCD glass plugs into and yes you will need to disassemble the cluster - after dropping the steering column and removing the trim ring, plastic "glass" and the screws the cluster just pulls straight out but sometimes requires a little bit of force - again be very careful when working with the LCD glass - you do not want to break this as they are difficult to find and not cheap ( I paid $300 about 4 years ago when my 90 coupe has this problem also )
