Just got back from visiting Mr. Goodscrew. The clueless Service Rep. had no idea what type fluid goes into my 91 6spd. I pointed out that the Owners Manual shows it takes a 5W30 weight lube but he did'nt know if it was regular oil or "special" GM fluid. He sugested I go to another GM dealer which specializes in Corvettes to have it done. The Parts Dept. looked up the part number and said that they would have to order a whole case of the fluid and charge me for it eventhough I would not be using the whole case. Have you ever heard of such lousy service? Any help would be appreciated.
Foot Note:It does use engine oil but requires a certain ph and chemical composition. You can either use GM P/N 1052931 5W-30 or BMW M5 engine oil. This oil can only be purchased at a BMW dealership. It is imported from Europe through Castrol. BMW P/N 07510009420 10w-60 fully-synthetic.
Pick up 3 - 1 liter containers (approx $30). I got this from http://www.zfdoc.com./faq.htm
I went and got some once from a service department and they sold me auto tranny fluid (what their "expert" in the back said they use). Needless to say I took it back and got the right stuff.
Next time I will change the oil my self. Just got back from the chevy dealer for ZF6 oil changed, cost $93. With the corvette club discount I still paid $85
You need a special size Allen key (unless you just happen
to have a 17mm (!!) key hanging around (about $15 at Sears)
to open the drain and fill ports.
Then, since you can't pour the oil in, you need a hand pump
of some sort, and the one I found was $20.
Of course, then you would own the tools for next time...
ZF has also approved Castrol formula RS 10W-60 available at BMW dealerships. Have heard that BMW is going to stop importing this oil.
When I went to purchase a case of this stuff, the BMW parts guy said he hadn't heard this. I bought a case anyway. My ZF shifts soooo much better with the Castrol, and it's ZF approved, I could never go back to the GM stuff.

Yes I have, it sounds like Woodfield Chevy in Schaumburg. I hate Chevy dealers like that. Go to the BMW dealer, get some Castrol and you'll be better off.

 Question......... I just bought Redline MT 90 gear oil for my 6 speed. Has anyone run this stuff before? Is it compatible with what's in there? Bottom line.... am I gonna blow up? Please let me know! :seeya
Red Line MTL may be used in transmissions which recommend 70W, 75W, 80W, or 85W GL-4 gear oils, or SAE 30 or 5W/10W30 motor oils. If a 90W GL-4 or SAE 40, 10W40, or 15W40 is required, MT-90 may be used.
