Jump started my 91 coupe this evening and when it started, I noticed that it was running very rough. Took it out for a spin and while it smoothed out some, it still isn't running as it normally does. The check engine light came on soon after it started up and stayed on for several minutes. Went out for a second or two and then came on again. Did this several times.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong or need attention?
The check engine light set a code in all probability. You need to pull the code and that will point in the direction you need to look to fix your problem.
Stick the ends of a paper clip into the upper right terminals of the ALDL, turn the ignition On and count the SES flashes. You'll see three "12"s followed by each trouble code flashed three times, concluded with three more "12"s.
You might not have enough voltage in your battery. Check for voltage output of your alt., and also of your battery. If it doesn't have enough voltage it could effect signals sent to your ecm/pcm. If you check the codes, as the others have suggested and also have enough voltage, you might have damaged your ecm/pcm. I just encountered this problem on a friends '95, we couldn't figure it out. He took it in to a garage and they found the bad ecm!
Sounds like you have a low voltage condition. When the ECM sees reduced voltage, it will start pulsing the injectors longer based on a specific schedule relative to voltage available. For a good system check, would be best to start with a fully charged battery, pull the codes, start the vehicle and check alternator output. Do you know what caused the need for a jump start?
