Starter problems? or something else??
I have a '91 L98 automatic that has a problem starting. The perplexing thing is that it happens about once a month or month and a half. It makes a mechanical whine which is very loud and sort of high pitched. The engine never comes close to starting. It is very hard to diagnose by myself since it happens so infrequently. Anyone have a similar problem or know what the problem is? Thanks in advance! :smash:

It sounds like you need a starter solenoid. If you have many miles on your car and have not changed the starter in over fifty thousand miles,it might be a good idea as preventative maintenance to change the starter and solenoid as a unit. It might just be a dry bendix or bad contact in the solenoid. But for as cheap as starters are today, it would be cheaper to replace it now before it gets you stranded on the road somewhere. :cheers:

If ya have a little extra cash you might want to consider a mini-starter from Powermaster, etc. Just as much or more torque but about 40% smaller and easier to install. This would be an advantage if you ever install headers.
