I noticed while timing my car, it seems to idle better and faster when I advance the timing a few degrees instead of setting it at 6 degrees. Is there a down side to doing this. I did disconnect the one distributor wire. Does the engine have to be set in service mode and the IAC disconnected when timing? I have done the minimum idle adjustment by the book

personally i would reset to 6 degrees, then follow the minimum idle adjustment procedure, search for it on this forum.
then go from there. that way you know you are set correctly.
note that if you have an 85, gm called changed the base rpm from 450 i think to 500. cured some 85 issues.
I played with the timing on my 85 and found thru trial and error that the engine liked 10 degrees better than the stock setting of 6. No real down side. This setting also responded better at the 1/4 mile track.
When you reconnect the EST connector after setting the timing the ECM sets the timing to 20°, so "seems to idle better" with the EST connector open means nothing.
