Anybody have any tips on how to get good fit-up between the dash pad and windshield? I had to remove the dash pad on my 1996 coupe to fix my PKE module, and now that I've done that, the dash pad doesn't seem to fit very well. I have about a 1/4 inch gap between the pad and the windshield completely across the front. It looks terrible! Most of the mounting at the front seems pretty good except at the guide pin at the DIC upper right corner. There is quite a gap there and the pin isn't engaged very much. I've been beating on the pad with a mallet and a wood block, but I'm leery of damaging the pad. Any tips?
Heh, yep, that's pretty much the conclusion that I came to. I took it out and put it in again and it's quite a bit better but still not great. Now the gap is about a 1/16 inch at most between the pad and the windshield seal. The edge of the dash pad looks like it has an indentation along it, like it used to sit under the windshield seal. I don't see how it could ever go that far forward. To do that, it would need to move forward another 1/4 inch or so. I don't see that happening. The worst part is that the edge of the dash pad tends to curl upwards. It seems like it needs to be pressed downwards and under the seal.
Things are now lining up nicely on the other end at the instrument panel. I'm tempted to add a 1/2 inch round foam strip to wedge between the windshield and the dash pad to make things nice again. Seems like a kludge and I'd rather fix the real problem than do something like this. I wonder if part of the problem is that the windshield seal is old, shrunken, and worn out. It looks quite ragged from being in the sun.
