I have an '87 with a 4+3 manual that has a lot of drivetrain play. At first I thought it was the U-joints so I replaced all 6. I also pulled the Dana down and measured the backlash, it's right on spec. Then I thought maybe the rear hubs, but they feel tight on this 61K car.
It causes some knocking at low speeds (oscillating) and is just generally annoying like a bad U-joint would be.
Just wondering if this is a road traveled before and maybe I'm missing something. I guess it could be the trans or the yoke, but it seems unlikely. The play is there with the OD engaged or not.
Check the bolts on both ends of the C-beam. Torque the front bolts to 33-40 ft-lbs and the rear bolts to 51-67 ft-lbs.
Have you taken a look at Motor Mounts?
there could be some play in the trans. is this problem new to the car, (have you been driving it for a while or new owner) I have felt some gear lash in the past in 4+3s is it Excessive?

I replaced the motor mounts last year. The C-beam is tight. It's been a problem for the 3 years I've owned it. It was just over this last winter that I went through all the stuff I thought it might be to no avail.
have you checked rear suspension components? And are you leaking transmission fluid anywhere?
I replaced everything in the rear suspension over the winter. It didn't make a difference. I didn't change the hubs because they felt tight, maybe that's next. I do have them.
The T-10 drips a little from the shift seals, but it's full. The OD is full of new ATF and no leaks.

If you turn off the O-D does the problem get better or worse or no change, I ask because when the Sprag gear or clutches are on their way out they can cause a shutter or looseness (slip)in the trans.

The OD being on or off makes no difference. Good thought though.
When you say driveline movement, what exactly do you mean? You mean like year a clunk? You mean like you feel a clunk go through the drive train up to the tranny? Is it when you engage the clutch?

Yes, a clunk. It seems to get worse as things heat up and I think it's coming from the trans, but not 100% sure as sounds travel through the driveline. When the 4+3 is not in OD, it should be locked to the T10's output, but I wonder if it's not. Maybe Carter above is right.
I need to disconnect the driveshaft and see how much play is in the trans. It sounds like a rear end clunk, but I pulled that over the winter and checked the backlash, it was right on spec.
