For those of you who have LPE, TPIS or Hooker long tubes on your L98(with emissions hook ups), tell me how you like them, how easily or difficult they were to install, and how they perform. Deciding which ones to buy this week for an 85 L98. Thanks.
Hey Scorp, how is the coating holding up on those headers?
Umm.... so far so good. I've put 10.5k miles on them so far in all weather conditions. There are a few spots that aren't like REALLY shiny anymore and have hazed a little, but the still look great.
LPE here. changing plugs is a pita. had to shorten a spark plug socket and drill the end out to complete slide onto the plug and use a wrench. it made life easier for changing the plugs. as far as numbers, to many other mods at once to know what did what...

Will be 2 years with the TPIS headers in a few months. Finish has held up perfectly. We had the standard aftermarket parts issues with these in terms of fitment (specifically on the passenger's side header). After some small modifications, they bolted right up. No leaks, no problems.
2149's here (Scorp's 1st set). I also have the Hooker 16720 front Y pipe. I'm not too happy with the Y at this point it but I'll live with it. The front Y pitches the catalytic convertor over to the drivers side of the car slightly so its not centered. Still was able to get Bassani cat back system aligned properly though. So, I really like the headers themselves... just that the Y pipe could use help. I have not heard of anybody else having this problem so perhaps I just got a dud of a Y.

Why bother with a spark plug socket. I ran the LPE headers for 2 years and changed lots of plugs in my 383. All I ever used was a box/open end wrench. Could do all 8 plugs in about 30 mins. 1-7 from the top and #8 from the bottom. Never a problem.
TPIS here. Shine is gone coming out of the heads. No leaks after 1 year and a half, and that is the major concern. Emmision hook was no problem with the earlier egr tube, I had to buy.
Thanks for all the great responses. I am leaning towards the TPIS due to the fact that they have the proper Y pipe flange for my car and seem to have good fitment.
I have Hooker competition long tubes. They look great after 10 years,
were already installed when I bought the car. I have 245rwhp/326trq
with just those and a mild cam
Like Bill, I had the same problem with the Hooker Y pipe angle-ing down. Requires cutting and welding to fix.
However, I prefer the Hooker bolt-on y pipe to the slip-on y pipe. I remove my headers often and would think that the slip-on connection would potentially be difficult to remove.
Do not use the header flange bolts that come from Hooker as they rust and seize. Once, I had to saw one off. I am trying stainless steel bolts with slightly smaller heads than the ones Hooker provides. The smaller bolt heads give much needed clearance for the wrench.
