I just changed the water pump and put the coolant in 50/50 per instruction and the car was running ok, no leaks, but the temp started going up...185...190...200....i started to get worried. Coolant was coming out of the cap and the upper and lower radiator hoses were hot, the heater hose was cold. I talked to a buddy of mine and he said thats because of air in the system....open the cap and fill it while the car is running.
Does this sound right? would the car get that hot that fast? Seemed like I put alot of coolant in...but who knows. Any suggestions?
btw...i put a brand new thermostat and coolant sensor in when i changed the water pump.
any ideas are comments greatly appreciated...thanks :)

there is also a air release on the top of the t-stat housing.
while the car is running, slowly release the screw and let the air out, until there is coolant.
I am not a fan of a 50/50 mix. too much. in NY, I would used a 60 water and 40 coolant... with a bottle of water wetter.

Speaking of Water Wetter how often should you put it in your Rad. I put mine in the last time I drained and refilled system. Since then the shop put on a water pump and I don't know if they used new coolant?
Will it hurt to add more?

With the engine cold, remove the filler cap. Open the bleed valves by the thermostat until antifreeze flows out freely. Be sure to catch the little bit of coolant with rags so it doesn't run down on optispark.Refill the radiator to the top. Put on the pressure cap. Be sure you have proper amount of coolant in the overflow tank. You should be all set now to run it.

After flush and fill I had the same problem except I overheated and filled the recovery tank. When the engine cooled the fluid from the recovery tank stayed and the hoses collapsed from the suction of the system trying to recover the fluid. Ended up the cap gasket was cracked. After the fluid boiled over into the recovery tank the check valve on the cap was frozen and wouldn't let the fluid back in.
Moral of the story.....Don't overlook a $5 radiator cap....Change it :seeya

Are you sure you put the drive coupling on? With the stock Thermostat the 96 runs around 220-230. Are you sure your radiator is clean and getting good airflow? Are both fans running on high speed? Look between the radiator and condenser through the hole on the Pass side. Is it full of leaves and crap?
