Why does hose keep falling off? Tried everything, PLEASE HELP!!!!
Hi, i have a 91 convertible and am having a strange problem. The hose attaching the air cleaner box to the engine keeps popping off of the air cleaner box end. I have tried clamping it down with the turning screw at various places. Top side etc. Nothing is cracked or worn at all. What would cause the hose to keep popping off and what can i do to alleviate it. Sometimes it stays on for a few hours of driving and sometimes for a few days but invariably it will pop off while driving. I can feel a difference in performance when this happens. Any info you have will help. Please tell me how to keep this hose on the air cleaner box!! It is fine on the other end. Thanks
That is a strange problem....I never heard of that happening as a common problem.
I would suspect that the clamp isnt holding or the screw on it begins to back off too easily after a little while of driving and would suggest to inspect the clamp up close and see if the ridges are worn down. You may need a new clamp.
Also,is the filter intake box secured or is it loose moving around a bit?
If the clamps at both ends of the accordian hose are the same size, try switching them around and see if that helps.
:)
The clamp is not backing off at all because when it pops off if you line up the hose with the air cleaner box after popping off it does not even come close to fiting over the box because the clamp is still locked down on the hose. I am at a loss and it is really irritating. The dealer is closed today although i dont know what they would tell me anyway. It makes no sense. it's like the box does not want to go far enough ino the hose so i can clamp it down for good. Please continue to throw ideas out there as i am at a loss right now.
Thanks,
Bob
I had that same problem when I had my '90. It was frustrating, since the air cleaner box opening was cone shaped, tightening it down just "squeezed" the hose off even faster. I don't know the solution, maybe the neck of the plastic air box is warped, maybe a new airbox would solve it  . I thought the "lip" may have been bent down from overtightening the clamp. Since I was mad at the friggin thing at the time, I just put a self tapping screw through each side of the hose and into the plastic air box right under the band clamp. Stayed put from then on. I still think a new air box would have solved the problem the right way though.
I had the same problem with my 91. I used three screws, one on each side and one on the top. It's a pain to remove, but stays in place untill I want it off.
I have the same problem too! Everytime I pop my hood the air hose is off! :mad I guess I'll have to go get some self taping screws now, but I was planning on getting the TPIS cold air induction, I wonder if that will solve the problem?
I had exactly the same problem with my 90. I thought about screwing it into the air box, but i was worried about it pulling the duct of under torque twist, and spliting the duct.
I sprayed inside the duct and the lip on the air box with 3M interior trim glue. This sealed the joint as well as fixing the duct off problem.
Take a piece or coarse sandpaper and rub it around the neck of the air filter and around the inner lip of the flex tube. These two rough surfaces should prevent slipping and won't inhibit air flow.
If this isn't enough you could then try a little trim adhesive on the neck of the air filter assy.
I think the air duct shrinks with age. I ended up drilling a hole through each side of the clamp and put a screw into the air box. this has worked well for many miles.
I like the 3M on the inside solution. But it won't be removable.
This is a fairly common problem with 90's and 91's with L98's and the newer style radiator introduced in 90.
My original airbox and the replacement I bought new from my Chevy dealer had the same problem.
If you overtighten the clamp it just makes it worse and will eventually crack the mold seam on the side of the airbox.
The ribbed duct is designed to be flexible to allow for movement between the chassis and the motor.
I bought a third used airbox about a year ago and it seems to be working okay.
This problem occured on my 90 and while at Gordon Killebrew's school, he removed the hose, applied a fair amount of what appeared to be super glue and put it back on. Removal later wasn't a problem but the substance seemed to leave some residue that allowed for better sticking. Now there is a good idea, C4 superglue, or maybe C4 duct tape. There I go again.
it's interesting to see how common this is. So, after reading all of these solution what do you all feel the best one is?? I'm going to have to do one of themwhich would be the most likely to be a permanent fix?? The glue permanantly sealing it is no big deal because the whole box can be taken off in necessary in about 2 minutes. What exact clue is it and what if any special things did you do to make the seal??
Thanks for all the replies
BTW this is probably a stupid question but am i doing any damage when i drive around with it popped off?? I sure hope not but there is an air filter for a reason. Please tell me i have not been destroying my engine the past few weeks. I just drove 500 miles this weekend and hope i'm not hurting her, am i??

If the duct comes off then you're pulling in un-filtered air from the engine compartment - not necessarily fatal, but not good for the engine either. Probably didn't do any real damage unless you did some driving through a dust storm.
When I was having problems with mine coming off when the airbox cracked I used duct tape as a temporary fix. Crude and messy, but effective.
I used a tin of spray on trim fixing glue like you would use to fix a head liner in a car or plastic trim material to a wheel well etc. It was made by 3M but any type would work as well. You need to prepare the duct and air box to key the surface as described. to get a good seal just put plenty on and don't over do the jubilee clip.It does not produce a perminant joint so you can remove the duct if you need to. It leaves a sticky patch which keeps it on second time around.
one more question. What changed in the 90 and 91 L98 engine causing this to happen. It seems that lonly people with those years have the problem. Any ideas?? BTW it's cruise night tonight and i still havent fixed it. I amgoing to glue it i think but havent had the time. Hope if she pops off i am not hurting her.
