Default Looking to purchase an 84 vette quick question

Hey all,

So I looked the vehicle over and everything really looks great. Test drove and the only thing that seemed odd was that it seemed to shift quickly between 2-3. It was in third before I really got a chance to feel the gears out.

So my question is this common with the C4? Car has 75000 mi and what you would expect from a 30 yr old vehicle.

Thanks

Sounds like the 2-3 shift is "stacking".

Check the trans fluid, make sure its at the proper level, has the proper color and doesnt smell burnt. Obvious I know, but easily overlooked.

After that, check the TV cable. You will have to remove the air cleaner to do this.
It should be tight with no "sloppiness". You can also reset the cable in less than a minute.
Worked when my 84 started shifting so low, I was in OD at 30 mph.

Youtube has many vids on how to do it.

Shift points under easy throttle should be (about) ..
1-2 15 - 20 mph
2-3 30 - 35 mph
3-4 45 - 50 mph

How hard youre the throttle will have an effect on shift points, as will the terrain youre on. Hills, etc.

Congrats on the LT!!

I looked for over two years for a decent condition, fairly priced LT-1 w/ a 6 speed.
After looking at too many over priced junks I bought my 84.
No, its not a LT-1 six speed, but its still a lot of fun,

There were a lot of complaints about the shifting characteristics of the early 700r4s, its in all the vintage magazine tests too. It seems chevy wanted to get the vette into the highest gear as soon as possible for emission/mpg reasons.
