Default Diagnostic costs.

How much might a mechanic charge for only diagnosing a problem. Let's say the problem is potentially internal and complicated and could take awhile to find and figure out. I need to know if a mechanic I know is sticking it to me.

I've seen hourly rates from $50-$110.

If you don't want him to tear anything apart and just hook up some diagnostic equipment that would be one price. Seems to me a lot of diagnostic activity can be done in an hour. Then if you want compression checks and cylinder leakdown tests done that could be another hour. It all depends on what he plans to do and is capable of doing. Then the transmission diagnostic could be some more money (if thats what you want him to look at). Even with all the equipment, you need to have confidence in what he is doing. If its local joe grease monkey at the service station then $25 might be too much. And if it is an experienced (years of experience, not months) mechanic that has a good reputation then I'd think $100-125 might be reasonable. So whats your problem? You can probably get the best diagnostic help right here on this board :)
