Default Header Bolts

This might be a dumb question, but what bolts are used to secure the headers to the heads? I have to replace my header gasket so I want to replace the bolts because they're very rusted. I see kits online for locking bolts, but I'm not sure if that's what I need. Thanks!

If what you've had in the past has worked well and provides easy access to them I'd duplicate what you have. Even some of the more exotic in appearance aren't particularly effective when put to practical use. Is this the first gasket replacement or have you done previously?

This is the first time I've had to replace the gaskets.

Did you do the header install or was it done by a PO? Can you get a wrench on all of the bolts easily that are on the car now? That I believe would make my mind up for me.

How old is the header install?

I never installed the headers. They were installed about 7 years ago I think. I can get a wrench on all the bolts, so it doesn't look to difficult.

Summit Racing sells sets of bolts for your headers..You can get either steel bolts like you have now , or stainless steel that won't ever rust...Like mentioned , use antiseize on the threads or you may never get them out...Bolt head design is your choice, but if the ones you have now work well, I would replace with the same style.....WW

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it. Are they just standard 1inch bolts? I see so many Stage 8 kits on Summit, but some of the reviews said they were to long for their headers.

I used the stainless steel ARP 4001109 bolt kit. It has 5/16 six point heads and I can get a socket on 11 of the 12 bolts. Being able to use a torque wrench is good.

I would think you could remove one and measure the "under-head length" and duplicate that. Aside from that I would think you could measure the thickness of the flange, add 3/4" and buy something that is short of the total measurement by maybe 2 threads. Most are advertised at 1" UH.

I would think you could buy these "local" in either a 12 point reduced head or a 6 point reduced head. Just make sure they have a fixed flange.
