serpentine belt tensioner problem

Default serpentine belt tensioner problem

On my 1988, I can't put a square drive 1/2 inch wrench into the square hole on the belt tensioner because it is behind the black disk that is mounted on the water pump pulley. Is there a problem with the tensioner, or what? Thanks.

I used a 1/2" breaker bar. Its a little thinner than a ratchet and the swivel allows you to work it in.

I helped a friend change his, i removed the frisbee from the water pump, 4 bolts, then used the 1/2" drive to change the belt.

Most leave the frisbee off.

Jim,
I believe the original thought was that the frisbee would absorb the shock of the A/C compressor starting and stopping. My frisbee has been gone for a few years and I've noticed no abnormal movement of the serpentine belt when the compressor engages and it's much easier to access the water pump and the serpentine belt.
