Default Anybody using a different starter on an LT1?

My starter is fine and has never given me the least bit of trouble. I am curious though if anybody is using any aftermarket starters? I'm flipping through my Jegs catalog and just came across them. I was curious if any of the light weight, high torque starters will work on an LT1.

Unlike most topics that pop up every other day around here, nobody every discusses starters. I guess that just means the LT1 starter is a reliable design?

Give me your thoughts on all of the aftermarket starter options.

I have never had any trouble with a starter so no need to look for a replacement.

The factory starter is pretty light, and a gear reduction type. It's a good starter, and I don't think the aftermarket ones are any better. I had a few other brands of "mini" types on Camaros and they allways gave me problems till I used the LT1/4 starter.

these starters are acutally made by Mitsubishi.

when they DO wear out, it is because the contacts have died.

these contacts are cheap, too... expect under 10.00... hence, these are very rebuildable starters.

the only concern, after a number of miles, the windings can fail from heat... so a rebuilt unit may be a nice alternitive.

The LT1 starters look a lot like the lightweight aftermarket ones. Some of the aftermarket ones claim to be good for 20K starts vs stock 5K. Just remember to go to the Toyota dealership for the contacts when rebuild time comes. The plunger usually just needs some filing. Just file this in the back of your mind for later.

I agree with ya.
Guys who have the L98 and older engines normally are the ones to change over to a light weight design like the LT1 starters. The stock LT1 starter works fine. I replaced mine recently and used a starter heat shield blanket to protect it from the heat.
FYI - If you use a starter blanket make sure you trim it and keep away from both the wires connected to the starter. The blanket is conductive. It will through tiny sparks if it is touching both the cable and that cat coverter heat shield.

Does anyone know the difference in the starter for 88-91 versus 92-96? Somewhere I heard something about advantages to the L98 one, but I can't remember why. I know they are very light. Somewhere else I hard that the later LT1/4 was better. Although different part numbers, are they interchangeable? They are all gear reduction. Thanks in advance. Paul
