My 1984 4 plus 3 caught on fire. The alternator had a short and it had an engine fire. I do not have the car it is in VA. I live in NJ.
So a new car is in the works. Question.
I really liked driving the 84. But, even with new shocks, tires, ball joints etc. I never really felt it was good at 80 mph. Although some of that went away when the overdrive was working.
So do I buy another 84. Or do I go to a newer six speed manual like an 1989/93. Just asking. Are the TPI systems difficult to work with? Can I get more than the stock 240 hp without taking the whole engine apart?
Id go drive a few, an LT1 with a 6 spd and decent rear end gear will feel night and day different. Yes TPI is a royal pain to work on and not really much faster than what you have
If you really look you can find a sub 100k mi C5 for under 10k these days thats still decent not a bad alternative just beware they have their electrical issues like C4s and they are not cheap or simple fixes. Nice step up though, food for thought
first of all thank you all.
What would you pay for: 1989 6 speed around 100k miles. Car looks like good paint and interior. Runs well. BUT, cannot get it started. Just asking.
1993,4,5 sound like good choices. The 1984 has a very simple fuel injection system. But it is sooooo underpowered. !985 TPI, 1986 TPI, ABS and air bags.
Anyone buy a salvage, flood damaged or otherwise. Thanks for the input. I do not buy convertibles. and frankly I miss my 1969. Poppong out that rear window with the roof off iwas so great. AND NO TORX. Jesus who thought of that?
The c7 has a latch. Is it the first year with the latch to hold the roof?
Let's be honest. In stock form the 1984 is slow. So are all L98s and LT1 cars. Lol
I wouldn't buy a flood car, salvage....possibly, but only if I saw the damage prior. Salvage = 50% of value for a non salvage Corvette.
That 1989 that doesn't run is worth about $1,500. I just bought a 1992 LT1 6 speed that didn't run for $1,000. It runs now.
You are being honest, lol. I have seen a few salvage cars that were normal wear and high mileage. I may take a look at them. I think I am sold on the C5. I hated that roof on the C4. It must take ten minutes to put it in and out.
Early C5 cars have some computer issues and abs issues, if I am not mistaken. The parts are no longer available so you're stuck trying to get old parts. Just a heads up.

Where do you live?
I absolutely love desert area cars. The last C4 I had spent most of its life on or around USAF air bases in the South West. It was a joy to work on as there was no corrosion on the bolts and nuts to speak of.
I am trying to move to NW Arizona when my home sells in Michigan. Here is a listing of 85-96 C4s in that area from Craigslist: https://mohave.craigslist.org/search...query=corvette

So sorry to hear about the fire in your '84! There must have been something else wrong in the car. (Performance alignment?) I've only had my '84 up to 120, but I'm really surprised how nice it feels! It's always asking for more! (One time was chasing a ZR-1.)
By the way, that Z couldn't loose me on the twistys! The '84 really handles. (The straights was a different story.)
