Default Clogged Evaporator (Before & After)

Along the way of fixing the AC, I came across an odd problem: the blower was pushing cold air into the cabin....but a really weak amount. I could barely feel it. My first thought was that the air vents were blocked. I DID find some sort of abandoned rodents nest in one vent, but the problem persisted.

I started doing some research, and found posts like this one:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...rator-out.html

I decided to check out what was hiding in there, and for your viewing pleasure, this is what I found (and what I cleaned it into) ...

Do you know if you can pull the evap housing off as 1 unit? Or do you have to remove both parts separately?

If you mean the plastic housing that holds the evaporator and blower motor, it would have to come off separately (you can see other side still on in my pics). The reason being that the high pressure and low pressure lines connecting to the evaporator won't let you remove it as one piece. As with mostly everything in this car, its also too snug in there to really wiggle out as one piece. The instructions in the link I provided are pretty straightforward, check them out!

Forgot to mention that I was replacing the evaporator. So those lines were disconnected. I ended up just removing the side you removed.

You can see that gasket going around the evaporator. That's the piece that people forget to reuse, or make a replacement when they replace their evaporator. And so a lot of air ends up going around the evaporator when that gasket is missing.

Cleaning that black goop up was a mess. I'm going to use the duct seal from the hardware store to seal around the case and the evaporator lines.

I'm wondering if you have a refrigerant leak that is leaking oil and collecting into a sludge coating?

My evaporator was the OEM evaporator and it looked new other than some debris in the top right corner.

Wow...before your cleaning, that thing looked like a dryer lint screen after a months worth of laundry. After finding that I'd be checking the face of the radiator as well. Man, that's some debris laden air that car has been through...seriously!

Oh joy. I guess I'll do that too while I'm replacing the heater core.
