Default Lt1 hot cam ?

Just wondering for you people that have installed the hot cam. If you had to do it over again would you use the same cam or change it to another. If so why.

na, should have got a more boost friendly cam. But for the dollar, you can't beat it! I paid like $90 for mine.

The hot cam is a nice factory upgrade. Most owners that are looking to install a cam. Obviously looking for more power. How much power & add-on's. Will be decided to the individual's goals / preference. My 1st cam was a Dana 327CI - 350HP in a 305 Carb setup in the 80's. Many builds later. A Holley stealth ram, +.125 domes, 1206 port heads, 357CI. I installed a CC 306 awesome results. Currently I have a LE 236 grind in a LT1 383CI same Holley stealth ram. 1206 heads. Fairly extreme.

The hotcam isnt a bad choice for boost. It has the higher exhaust duration and its lobe seperation angle isnt too low.

I'd definitely do it again; sure a "hot Cam" ain't the "hottest" cam out there by any means, but it's a definite improvement that you can feel, and on an 96 LT4 it is truly a factory "drop in"; good for 30 to 50 hp, say a 10 to 15% gain minimum over and above the 330 hp baseline, and , at least in California, mine sailed through smog; plus LT4 "hot cam" with matching springs is one of the few bargains out there for these engines.

Was going to use the hotcam, then found the gm846 as a upgrade to both the stock cam and hotcam. This cam is used in the zz383 crate.

I installed it with supporting mods and I don't like it one bit. I need a cam that likes the 383 cubes any suggestions . fresh 383 all forged rotating assembly 10to1 trick flow 195s ported , edelbrock lt1 intake, 52 mm throttle body , 1-7/8 ss long tubes , 32 pound injectors hi volume fuel pump. car is an auto matic rear diff is 2.59 (ouch) tuned on the dyno. I know the gears are killing me not sure on what ratio and what stall convertor to go with> don't have the dyno sheet handy to look at and would be embarrassed tell you the figures. the tuner said the motor was running out of air what ever that means. they had it at 165 mph on the dyno at 5500 rpm"s. any help would be great.

Good question...I was thinking of doing it over the winter.

The one thing I noticed in the answers is that most have highly modified cars.

Could someone with a fairly stock LT1 give their impressions?

I've had mine for over 10 years. I's a daily driver, makes power over 6k rpms. Behaves in stop and go traffic, didn't hurt the gas milage, Great for a street car. I wouldn't want less, more would be fun sometimes but I wouldn't want to give up the low end torque when stuck in traffic.

and how's that 846 working out for you? any smog test results? I'd definitely consider it; I believe some on this forum have passed California smog with one.

Darren2264 like many you built an engine but the rest. Get a 3.73 and re-evaluate. IMO the 2.59 doesn't belong in a Corvette unless you are racing at Daytona.

What supporting mods? Of you bought the kit, the springs are garbage and you will get valve float at higher rpm. I bought the cam for my rebuilt lt1 with 1.6rr but I swapped the springs to stronger lunati beehives. I don't have one issue with it. I also went with a 2500 stall converter to keep my car from lurching forward at Red lights. I honestly love my cam and setup. Good luck!
