Default 5w-30 ok for the track?

94 base coupe. 40,000 miles on it

Going to Blackhawk Race Track in Beloit ( short track)

Need to change my oil. Should I stay with Mobil 1 5W-30 or go with a 40 weight blend?

this is just my 2-cents (FWIW) - depends on the condition of your cooling system and if you're running a separate oil cooler. I'd go with 10W30 or 10W40 (premium brand) synthetic. it just might be safer to go 40 though. track and operating temps are the key.

Another post going on about oil weight. 40 weight won't lube the close tolerances in your engine as well

I will Google this for reference but
I thought the first # (5w) was the actual viscosity of the oil and the 30 was the temp range # ... But to hear you guys talk it seems as if my thinking is backwards

no flames, but your thinking is a bit wrong. for example, 5W30 - the "5" is the cold temperature viscosity, the "W" on a viscosity rating it means that this oil viscosity is rated for colder temperatures. the "30" indicates the viscosity index at 210 degrees F.

everything about those oil numbers you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask...

very good article brought to us by those fine folks at amsoil -
