can anyone help
I have never had this problem, but I have read that if the oil pressure sender is bad it will turn off the engine for safety. It is located behind the distributor on a stem. 1 of them send signals to the fuel pump that oil pressure is ok. I replace them both right away so they would not give me a problem plus they were leaking oil all over. Other than that I cannot imagine why the 85(no vats ) would start and shutdown. Check and clean connectors on the thing next to the blower motor for ac on pass side as it is some kind of spark module. Clean connectors in general that is what I did and have not had a problem in over a year good luck.
One other thing a bad fuel pump could start then stop.

It sounds like a fuel problem. Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you switch the ignition on? You can manually run the fuel pump from a pin on the ALDL connector.
You can also add a temporary fuel pressure gauge to the fuel valve. Use the schrader valve on the fuel rail to connect the gauge.

when starting fuel psi is 45 and when running 40 to 42

NOT true. The oil pressure switch is a BACKUP for the fuel pump relay, which is controlled by the ECM. If the fuel pump relay fails the oil pressure switch will apply 12 volts to the fuel pump when the oil pressure exceeds 4 PSI.
You can prove to yourself that the oil pressure switch is not "protecting" the engine by unplugging its connector. The engine will start and run just fine.
If you've had the fuel pump out, check to make sure the hose isn't blowing off the pulsator, check the pressure pressure with key on and make sure it stays up, if it falls right away, the hose is coming off the pulsator ....happened to me, same symptoms....

replace the fuel pressure reg and now the fuel is going up and down
replace the fuel pressure reg and now the fuel is going up and down
Is it going up and down with the key on and engine off?....pressure should go to 38 in 2 sec and remain there for awhile.....then slowly drop over 20 min or so....if not, then you have a loose line somewhere above the fuel pump to the pulsator probably, it slips out at pressure and back in when pressure drops.....you can also pinch off the return line to the tank when pressurized and make sure it holds....test for your pressure reg....good luck...keep trying, you'll find what it is.....Paul
