Just took it out for the first test drive and getting ready to start the break-in. There seems to be a whirlling sound coming from under the car and you can hear the gear whinning on deceleration. So what am I to do now, pull it all apart again? I hope not :mad ? Well its too late to call Justin at Zip and I won't be home tomorrow until after they close, so it looks like either a made dash next week or missing the Corvette show at the museum. Why do it all way have to happen to me?
Ok, I know someone on here bought the same rear from Zip that I did. Did anyone else have any noise on theres? This is so upsetting, just ruined my whole day!!!! :cry
Ok, just checked again and the leak is coming from the front yoke seal. IS this very hard to replace with the diff in the car? If it has leaked much maybe this is the cause for the noisey gears. If its not one thing its another! :boxing
Hey Zad,
I dont have a rear set from Zip but got mine from Ikerds(MAD sells Ikerds rears).Ikerds web site is http://www.vettepart.com
Mine was fine until the front seal leaked and I had it replaced...had 8K miles and just over a year old...wasnt warranty anymore. Its not hard to replace under the car...just ask again before you do it or follow the manual.
Pretty much Its remove the driveshaft, mark the nut location with paint and remove the nut and get to the seal, etc.
Anyways...if the oil level dropped much,it could whine. If you didnt add enough posi additive,it could whine. But since you said you hear it while driving and on decel,I think the gears are not set up properly or maybe the front seal nut is loose or theres burrs on them.
If this seal/rear end is under warranty,I suggest to send it back and have them fix it and check the backlash again.
I know its alot of work to do so...sorry to hear about it.If it helps, since replacing the front yoke seal once, its not leaked since then.
:)
Well I guess I'm just going to return mine with all of 1.5 miles on it. I don't know what happened buts its weird that it started leaking so fast. I'm sure I originally had enough posi additive in it, but not sure now. And I think there maybe a problem with the gears since it makes so much noise on deceleration. Well that means the 2.59 are going back in becuase I doubt they will be able to get me another set here by Monday morning since this set took 2 months. I'm not going to miss the Corvette Museum show this year and it starts Thursday so I don't have alot of choice. Maybe I'll buy another set this fall when I'm not driving it as much. :cry P.S. You going to be at the Museum show? Maybe we can meet up and say Hi. :seeya
Hey Zad,
Hope you get this nightmare worked out soon...hopefully they will come through 2nd time around.
I may be going to the museum show but not exactly sure when.If the weather is good it will be prob. saturday.I live 45 mins from there but need to get a sitter for the kids by then.Ill let you know something soon.
:)
I have the Zip 3.54s and I do have some gear whine on deceleration. It's not that noticable, but it's there none the less. As for the leaks, I haven't noticed any leaks coming from mine... Hope this helps. :)
I had a set of 3.54's installed last year (not ZIP's - probably the same manufacturer though) and had a slight whine for the first 100 miles or so, sounds fine now. The seat of the pants feel is great. Hard to keep my foot out of it now. Hope you find the problem.
I talked to Justin today , and as I figured the rears are on back order. I knew they would be since it took 2 months to get mine. I have to have my car running by Wed. of next week so I guess I'm going to pull them out and put the stock ones back. I'm going to just get a refund and maybe buy another set this fall or winter when I'll have more time for the car to be out of service. I was really looking forward to driving it to, my poor tires would have been dust. Anyway, I guess it just wasn't meant to be yet. :seeya
Bummer. If you can drop the rear diff yourself, why bother with going out of state to have a gear changed? I went to a local guy that does lots of the road and drag racers I know. He does 40-50 gears a year, about 10 Danas/year, so he knows what he's doing. Most of the so called Vette specialists don't have the experience. No whines, I paid $200 labor and $300 for the gear and install kit. And my diff has all the correct factory markings 'cause it's from my Vette.
Silver & Red CE: I went with Zip mostly because of there price and reputation on the Forum. I had never heard anything bad about them so I figured they would be safe. I would have just taken mine out and had it done if I could have found someone around here that I trusted and I didn't want my car to be "down" very long. Kind of seems funny now since I'm taking it out for the 2nd time this week and its undriveable now. Well, looks like I have a long night ahead of me if I want to get this one the FEDEX truck in the morning. I guess I'll have to do some searching around here after the Vette show and see what I can find. BTW, what brand of gears did you buy and did you mechanic have to do any machining on the factory case for the new gears to work? Thanks for the advice :seeya

I used the Viper gearset, no machining needed, but I have the six speed/Dana 44, I think you have an auto/Dana 36. Not sure what's the best gearset for the Dana 36 case. It did take a week to have the work done, but I did it during the winter when my Vette was down due to Chicago weather. It takes a real man to drop the case when the outside temp is 20* and the garage floor is cold
