i would liek to know what you have in your motor (as in parts) so i can get an ideal of what i may want to do with my block . Also please let me know if you tried stuff and it worked well or not so i wont make that same mistake on this motor. I would like to get 500-550 hp out of this motor with out NO2 or a charger thansk alot JAY :seeya
Get a hold of Lingenfelters book on small block Chevys. He talks about the 406 setup. Felpro makes a good set of gaskets to reduce the heat issues with the motor. Your going to want some good flowing heads. AFR, Trickflow and Canfield (if they have the temp sensor boss) are good companies to look at. Brodix has some good heads as well. The cam is going to need to be at least 230 @ .050 intake duration. You'll need a super ram or mini ram intake and a 7730 speed density ecm.
i'm just starting a 420, kind of on the mild side and expect around 430-450 at the crank. my plan involves a 10:1 static c/r, afr 195 street heads, a superram (port matched), and a comp cams hyd roller #12-422-8 (or maybe a 12-423-8), and hooker super comps. i'm staying smog legal on the visual, but if that weren't the case, i could do a lot better on the heads and cam. the heads are gonna bottle this motor up, and that limits my cam.
if you don't need to hassle emission compliancy, i would think 500+ would be a walk in the park and still retain good driveability. there are soooo many sharp people here that have cubic inches, i'm sure they'll chime in eventually. do a search on 400 block posts in the engine mods section, there is a LOT of fascinating info out there! good luck!
does brodix still make the yoge bear head? those were the baddest emission legal head i've ever seen. also what exactly makes a emissions head? the 113 D-port doesn't have heat risers? the cam i seriously can see limiting HP, the TPIS zz9 is about as aggressive as you can get & still pass emissions.
First off-what block do you have? Stock 400sb? Or aftermarket? If it's stock block; have it checked carefully for core shift and if it's already bored-and might want to also have it sonic checked for wall thickness, and of course magnafluxed.
Once you're sure it's a good block-go with the best arp bolts!
Good luck, you'll love the tq!
