Just exactly how should a 700r4 in an 87, totally stock shift?
Just had mine rebuilt, but OD failed to shift in, took car back, now shifts fine through all gears... BUT it almost seems like one gear, smooth no snap, just slides into the next gear, almost as if the next gear ratio was very near the ratio of the previous, Car responds immediatly, and just simply goes like hell and no real sensation of shifting(but you can tell it has). almost feels like the drive system on an ATV or snowmobile.
Is this how it is supposed to feel?
I have the feeling that before the rebuild the Trans had a shift kit in it, it would definatly snap into second, and very solid going into third. ( developed a bad shudder when shifting at medium then low throttle)
I have also checked the TV cable, Reset, then WOT by hand to set adjustment.( even pulled it a few notches more by hand )
Mine pretty much snaps...but it all depends on how your TV cable is adjusted. Sounds like it's too loose. Pull the adjuster back one click and see how it feels.
already tried that, ( actually 2 notches ).
and dont get me wrong, plenty of performace, just no snap.
But having read in a few other places, this is the norm i guess, will have to look into the performance kit from raptor
Which gear shift do think is not right? Depending on what they put in your transmission could determine the shift. I went with the kevlar band (2-4 shift), heavy duty clutches, and upgraded from the stock 6 clutch pack (for 3-4 shift) to a 9 pack, and went with a 10 vane pump. The car shifts like it has a shift kit and I'm glad now that I didn't put one in. Do you know that you got your old transmisson back?

Re: auto trans shift question? (Rick86)
Im kinda curious about mine. I dont know if it has a shift kit because I just got it and didnt get much info on it. But I do know that it slams and I do mean slams into second gear with as little as quarter throttle, and with 3/4 throttle it chirps the tires. It shifts very hard and firm. It could have a shift kit. Is there any way to check?
I'd double sure check they actually gave you your transmission. Some shops like to take the Vette tranny's and substitute in a camaro trans. You can tell by looking at the bottom of the trans case just behind the oil pan...if it has two bolt holes for a standard trans cross frame mount, you would not have the corvette trans. ( The corvette trans does not use these holes, so GM left it out of the case. )
