Im having a problem with my brake lights not working , My third brake light does though, Ive replaced all the bulbs, all my other lights work turn signal parking lights etc any suggestions
There is a seperate switch on the brake pedal for the lower stop lights. The lower brake light switch on an 87 has a light blue and orange wire going to it. You can unplug the brake light switch and measure the switch with an ohmeter to see if the switch makes when the brake pedal is pushed. Also, you can jump the brake switch plug to see if your stoplights work.
Check your 20 amp stop/haz fuse with an ohmeter.
if the Tail Light Running Lamps work but the Brake Lights don't, then i'd suspect the Brake Pedal Switch.
it has two separate circuits that are completed when the pedal is pressed
- one for the High Level Lamps (LightBlue cct#20), and one for the Main Brake Lamps (White cct#17). each circuit is supplied from a common 12V source (Orange cct#140)
is there 12Volts on the White wire when pressing the pedal?
do your rear hazards work? (they use the same filiments as the Main Brake Lamps)
if they do, then it's almost certainly the Brake Pedal Switch or it's associated connectors.
if they don't then you may have a faulty Turn/Hazard Switch Assembly, or a bad connection at any of three different connectors between your steering column and the tail lights (but i kinda doubt this)!
at first i though 'ground problem' - but the running lamps share the same ground, and since your running lamps are fine, ground is good.
this info for an '89 - '87 should be very similar, if not the same.
