hello there is a friend of mine that he wants to sell me dana 44 with 3:54 ratio compleated with rear cover ,drive shaft ,half shafts and tourqe beam along with it he has hypertech chip stage 2 , performance throtle position sensor , K&N air filter with open air lid , and 2 89 rims with AVON slick tires in a good price range ! but I have some questions that I like to ask ! what performance gains I am going to see in the quorter mile with this combo ?my 88 vette is totally stock with 2.54 ratio !! does my auto 700r4 transmition going to handle the stress off all this ??? how many E.T I am going to gain ? becouse If I gain some good E.T I will buy them :) please let me know .
What you gain 1/8mi with the 3.54s, youll lose in the next 1/8mi.
You have 2.59 as the stock ratio, 3.07 would be the perfect gear for the L98, but with the D44 casing if hes offering a good price AND youre planning on engine mods later, then i might buy that. You will need the D44 for the slicks, the D36 will shred itself to pieces. The slicks would be your best gain in ET.
Performance throttle thing is junk, so is the hypertech chip
thank you for the reply ! yes I am planing some engine mods in the future so guess I`ll be need a dana 44 :) but I read that if you lower the rear ratio you get more performance  mine is 2.54 and my brothers 89 is with 3.07 and his vette feels more faster than mine with lower gears  please help me on this one becouse I realy like to buy the parts but I am confused !! does my stock transmition handle the stress of 3.54 and the slicks ? my vette is not highly modified the only mods I done are listed in my sig ....
marlon, i think you missed vader's point. he was saying the 3:07s would be optimum on your car as it is.
the 3:54s are gonna wind to quickly for an l98, but may be ok for you later on if you affect the upper band with your mods or motor swap. as far as your tranny goes, it's a good unit as is, but if you want to beat on it a bit (like we all do) you may want to beef it up. the more you hook, the more stress you're putting on every part of your driveline.
the D44 will absolutely be a lot more stout, so in effect, all you're doing is transferring stress to the other parts of the driveline (u joints, half shafts, driveshaft, tranny). the key is first going after the easiest thing to break, which is the rear end (which you're doing), especially considering the use of slicks. if you're gonna stay low end (l98) then your best bet would be 3:07s in that D44.
Bottom Line, 3.07 is the perfect gear for your car as it is.
If youre going to do engine mods, then it would be OK to go to 3.54s.
If youre going with a SuperRam one day, the 3.07s will still be perfect for it.
If youre going with a Miniram one day, the 3.54s might be better for it.
Either way, a D44 carrier is a good idea, your tranny can handle the 3.07s or 3.54s, whichever you choose. However, if you put 3.07s in the D36 you have now, and also put drag slicks on the rear, youll blow the differential to pieces. The tranny can handle the drag slicks too, the stress is more on the differential/u-joints/halfshafts than on the tranny. So you must put a D44 on if youre going to go with drags one day, you dont have to beef up the transmission.
Thank you guys for the replys !! I don`t know how I survive with out all of you  what other performance parts you recomend like cam , heads , intake set up ??? I am a bit of the tpis mini ram set up and ZZ9X cam shaft what you think ??
I'll know for sure in a couple weeks when I put my D44 in Paul. I have the torque beam from the new one plus the one that's still on my car. Previous posts say the new one works perfectly, but you can also use the D36 torque beam by just re-drilling it because the D44 is aout an inch or so longer. Same issue with the driveshaft too they say. Keep in mind this is just from what I've read, not personal experience (yet :D )
If the slicks are taller than your normal street tires, the 3.54 may work well at the track. With normal height tires, you may not like it driving around normally though. I have read 3.73's are too far for stock TPI cars, and 3.54 is about as tall as you want to go.
