About 2-3 times per year, I get into my car and it won't start. All the lights come on, but the starter does not get any power. After the dreaded 5 minute wait, it starts right up.
Does anyone know why this happens sometimes?
Could putting the window down or popping the hatch before turning the car over set the "protection mode?"
Re: Anti-Theft System prevents start - SOMETIMES! (jshope)
It happens because the contacts in the ign sw don't make connection to the pellet in your ign key. THEN VATS won't close the start enable relay and your starter won't run. Proof is when you turn the key to crank and you do not hear the start enable relay click behind the center of the dash along with not hearing the starter motor run.
Another possibility is a defective clutch switch (xmsn selector switch if automatic). If these are at fault, you will hear the start enable relay click.

The vats has been known to cause problems but, it could be a heat soak problem with the starter as well. It could even be a bad ignition switch. There are just too many things to look at before pointing the finger at one thing in particular.
