Just got around to changing the oil, and filter (of course), on my '96 LT4. Owners manual says 4.5qt, but according to the dipstick, she took all of 5qts. What's the deal?
All indications with my own C4 LT1 cars and all the information I've seen online, a stock LT1 needs 5qt to reach the full mark on the dipstick, with a new filter. It's very convenient, what with the 5qt jugs of oil available everywhere.
I know it can be confusing if you look at the capacities below (snipped from the 1995 owner's manual), it says 4qt without filter change and 4.5qt with filter change. However, at the bottom right, it does say to add the specified quantity and recheck the level. So in the end, it's the responsibility of the person performing the service to get it right.
