Default Outside door handle removal

Does anybody know how the clip on the inside of the handle is unfastened?

The clip connects the rod to open the door.

Picture is of where the clip connects to the handle.

Thanks,
Roy

Its been way to long (25 years) since I have seen or thought of this but if memory serves it is an Internal clip were you want to spread the tabs away from each other and at the same time as they are spread you need to remove cylinder.

I take it you have already tried a trans pick, screwdriver, needle nose pliers route, I just looked at my FSM the blow up shows a little Horse shoe shaped spring clip. and it just said remove clip but not how to.

If you are talking about the clip on the rod that goes on the eyelet shown its just a plastic snap over clip with cone that goes thru the eyelet and the rod goes into the cone and the lock snaps over the rod much like a old Carburetor clip

Just removed this on my car and reinstalled for cleaning. There are two pcs that go on my 1996 door handle.

1) A switch with two wires. It is a white body with a hole to go on the shaft shown in your picture. Of course it is necessary to remove the "C" clip to install this switch. I think this switch is used for the alarm and power door lock system.

2) After you install this switch (if you year C4 has it) you then install a flat metal piece that looks like the profile of a cam lobe. It is keyed to go on one way. At the top of the lobe is the hold for the plastic link adapter. This link goes to the lever that drives the manual lock/unlock rod. After installing the flat metal piece you would reinstall the "C" clip.

I'm not 100% sure that was your question, but I can probably help answer others.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm working on a 92.
I'm trying to figure out how to unfasten the clip that holds the top of the rod that passes through the hole in the handle.

My original handle is still in the car, want to replace it with the one in the picture.

Hope that explains what I trying to accomplish.

Regards,
Roy

OK
that clears things up once you gain access do what pelenski (reply 4) pretty much said i will expand it a bit with that when dealing with the clip given the age you may windup snapping the little lock tab that snaps around the rod, also room is a bit tight so a friend with small hands may be a help.

There is a plastic clip that swings away from the rod and then the rod will just pull out. It looks something like this.

https://sp.yimg.com/ib/th?id=OIP.M6e...95&w=123&h=120

Then you remove the clip from the handle. Once it is free and you remove a similar clip and rod from the key mechanism, you can pull the handle out. You will have to slightly open the handle from the outside to clear the handle lever that sits inside.

Thanks pelensky and s carter,

If the clip does break, is there a source for replacements?

Thanks,
Roy

Yes. They are readily available as most GM cars have them.

They don't break very easily however.
