What cam to use?
Here is what I have. My 79 vette has an engine from a 87 model vette. The heads are aluminum, and the intake looks to be the older style. (I'm running a carb on it). I've got a bad roller lifter, that is making a tapping sound during acceleration. Since the engine has to be partially torn down anyway to replace it, I'm thinking of putting a hotter cam in.
I'm not looking for anything wild. Just more daily driver power on the acceleration end. My vette has 3.70's, and a TH350 transmission. The engine is pretty much stock. At the moment, 1/4 mile times are in the mid to low 14's. 0-60 times are around 6 seconds. What I really want is to drop the 0-60 time. Mid to low 5's would be great. I plan on adding an Edelbrock intake during the swap - probably the non egr performer.
The bad thing about the roller cam is that selection seems a little limited compared to the older style engines. Also, for some of the cams, I see a listing for 87 and earlier, and then 87 and up. My engine, for sure, is an 87. Which group does it belong to?
So, what would be the best choice for my application? I am looking at a Crane Powermax, with 276/284 duration, .488/.509 lift, and rpm range of 1000-5500. Also, a Comp. Cams XE 270, .495/502 lift, range 1600-5400. Any others I should consider?
Thanks for your suggestions or comments!

It looks like your engine is the 87 and up group, in 87 GM started to have a Hydraulic Roller Camshafts so they came stock with Hydraulic Roller Lifters but before that you had to get special Hydraulic Roller lifters if you wanted to run a Hydraulic Roller Cam.
Comp has a few cams that you can use:
XR264HR 264/270 0.487/0.495 on 110 1200 to 5200
XR270HR 270/276 0.495/0.502 on 110 1600 to 5400 looks like your cam
270HR 270/270 0.500/0.500 on 110 1800 to 5000
Lot of times you can just call them and have them make you a cam.
Do you ever goto Greer Dragway?

I haven't been with the vette. I have been there before with my Cutlass. Got my doors blown off! :cry
Before I go with the vette, I gotta make sure I have a chance! :D

We are trying to work the bugs out of a new car that we have now it is a 84 Montie Carlo.

PS you may know my brother Gerald Dyer
Do they still have "practice" on Thursdays? Once I get a few things on my vette fixed, it might give it a try.
BTW, have you ever dealt with a place in Greer called Corvettes and Classics? A guy named Joey runs the place. He seems like a good guy, and know vettes. It is kind of like a Hot Rod shop. I have been thinking of going there for a few projects.

It retains excellent driveability, has a healthy lope to it and really comes alive above about 3500 rpms. I'm a firm believer in this cam due to it's excellent street manners and high power potential. I've got some sound files in my sig, and of course check out the web page in my sig for more info.
My brother builds engines for people and he has a few running there, he runs in that Pure Street Outlaw class.
Nathan is right that the Hot Cam is a good cam too but I think you have to have 1.6 rockers to get that lift.

I personally like the ZZ4 Cam

dur at .050 i:208 e:221
