Lets see....88 coupe...Automatic...getting on the expressway...I get on it to merge into traffic......It accelerates, it lunges/lurches......then the motor winds up but I lose power to rear wheels. As I coast back down off the expressway.....and stop...I realize that the motor is running fine but when it is gear(drive or reverse)...it will creep very very slowly. no matter how High the motor revs......the cars still moves slow.....sounds to me like a tranny prob...but any insight would be great!
 :cry
Torque converter perhaps? A bad torque converter could cause the symptoms you describe, but I've personally never heard of a TC breaking (I'm sure it's happened, though).
I assume you checked the ATF level? Low ATF could also cause what you're experiencing....
I checked the fluid AFTER the problem...and I noticed it was more of a light brown instead of red. It showed on the dipstick when it wasn't running, when it was started, it disappeared...so I added more...but it still wouldn't move. As far as the TC, I dunno if that would break either.....but I guess anything is possible.
Does it work correctly in ANY gear? If it does, then probably in need of a new clutch pack. If it is screwed up in all gears, then maybe a pump problem.
I think your best approach is to get the line pressure checked and take it from there. A good tranny shop, should be able to make an accurate diagnosis.
A friend of mine had that problem when his transmission fluid was leaking out during a road trip. We hitchhiked to a gas station, and bought all their fluid. Had to keep refilling the van the whole way home.
I would bet that the tranny is cooked, at least the pump anyway. If you are lucky and the pump is not fried you might be able to just change the fluid and filter. Usually when the fluid gets like that it stops up the filter and that is when the tranny fries so if you are lucky you might have caught it in time.
