Hi everyone i'm new around here, i've searched all around the forum to see if anyone have the same probelm that i have. I have a 91 Corvette L98 and my problem is that my cooling fans only turns on when i turn on the A/C, but if don't turn on the A/C the fans doesn't work
(my vette has 2 fans, one is in the upper left side and the other one is in the low right side, both on the same side of the radiator)
i hope you can help me to find out what could it be

For '91 both fan relays are ECM controlled except when the AC signal over-rides it. I'd say the first thing to do would be to replace the CTS that controls the ECM or at least confirm it's connected. CTS L98 is just below the throttle body front of engine.
Is it possible that your coolant never got hot enough (greater than 228°) to cause the fan to come on? The second one comes on at 238°...
Hi, well i think that's not the problem because the temperature raises without a problem, i did a test sometime ago i started the engine and let the temperature raise and almost hit the mark of overheat and the fans didn't go on

Ok, so how hot is that?
I only ask because the Corvette analog temp gauges do not have a linear scale.
It is very hard to tell exactly what the actual temp reading is.
Does the '91 have a digital temp gauge?
If so, what temp is being displayed?

Had a lot of heating problems with my 88... finally bought a new primary fan and made both fans manual. Switch them on and off whenever I want.
Car never gets hot now and it can sit in traffic jams on hot days and never over heats.
I also added a manual fan control override switch in the cabin. I bought the kit from Ecklers I think it was. You can buy the switch, wires, etc separately - but I like the idea of buying the kit with everything I needed, pre-cut lengths of wire, etc. While installing it I also cleaned out the junk from between the radiator & shroud.
Also I saved this idea from CF member C422 - - it works on my '91 so you should try it:
Your AC unit actually has the ability to tell you what the coolant temperature is as well. NOTE: it's in Celsius! (to convert to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 and add 32)
Steps to check: hold the fan up and fan down arrows until "00" is displayed on the AC temperature display. Press the center fan button. Scroll to "16." Press the center fan button again. There's your temperature, digitally, and more accurately than the analog gauge.
I had both fan motors simply worn out. They would turn on most of the time but not always. Replaced both relays and motors, works fine now. Though the engine does get uncomfortably hot at least by the analog needle. Cooler thermostat and new sensors are on the to-do list this winter.
One fan had also blown it's fusible link (behind the battery) when a small rock had prevented rotation.
- the temp gauge it's analog in the dash
- the temperature was like 250°, very near of overheat so i turn off the engine
If you have the electronic AC option, you can check a digital temp through the HVA display. Press and hold the up and down arrows at the same time until the display shows "00". Press the up arrow until "16" is displayed. Then press the the center button and the temp in Celcius will be displayed.
Well it's been a while since i make the post looking for answers for my trouble but i want to thank every one who came with solutions and comments. I went to the workshop and find out 3 things.
- First, the radiator of my vette was broken so i had to replace it.
- Second, the fans actually works perfectly fine and turns on when the temp raises to 228° F and 238° F, actualy made both fans turns on when the temp marks 228° F
- Third, The temp gaunge in the dash was over limit when the Fans turns on, so i choose to replace the coolant temp sensor and the coolant temp gauge sensor....BUT the gauge still go almost to the limit when the temp is at 228° F.
Now i'm thinking the problem for the gauge is the dash because sometimes the numbers of the speed don't show complete or the fuel bar is light gray from the middle to the top but that's another story, thansk again for the replys for the temp and the fans
