How much fluid in torque converter before installing???
I'm sure it depends on the size, but approximately how much fluid should I pour into a new torque converter before installing onto the tranny?
12" (2200 stall) onto a 4L60e.
Is it EXTREMELY important to have it close-to-full immediately, or should I just pour it down the filler tube upon start-up (assuming pan is already full)?

I just put a yank converter in mine, the install sheet said 1 qt. I could be wrong, but I believe the main thing to do is to get some fluid in there so it wets everything and dosnt start dry.

Dump in as much as you can. I put mine on a 45* angle. It seems to help "burp" the TC. Mine took at least 1 qt. It takes a bit of time to get it all in.

Thanks Red 86 & Ski Dwn It,
I *thought* there was quite a bit of fluid in there, but when I dumped the original converter's fluid out, I only got a quart or so and was curious if this is all that was needed when starting up.
Good idea about setting at an angle and being patient when filling :yesnod:

I could only pour a little out of my old one as well, but then I set it in a drain pan on 3 deep well sockets and in 2 days got another 2 qts or so out of it. These things got to hold a lot, and the reason I say this is in the factory manual they say to change the fluid, pan drop and filter, that it takes 5 qts. To overhaul it takes 11 qts. So a lot has to be stored in the converter. Also, the reason I noted about wetting everything inside prior to start up come from working in a parts department at a ford garage and being able to watch the transmission rebuilder put them together, I noticed he always soaked the new clutch packs in fluid before reassembly.

Yeah, I had similar thoughts and was surprised to only see about a quart come out initially. I have since had it draining into a bucket and have seen another quart or so come out. I knew it had to be SOMEWHERE!
