'85 Vette, instrument cluster rebuilt by corvette central four months ago.
I start the car the instruments work fine. Two minutes later one flicker and the cluster is dead. Same thing happens next time I start up but maybe faster than two minutes. What should I check ? It doesn't appear to be the cluster itself.
First check both the 5A cluster fuse and the 5A LCD fuse with an ohmeter. If ok, then I would suspect a socket that has partially backed out , so remove cluster boards enough to reseat the sockets. If you can determine that the LCD's are working, but the 4 lamps are going out making the cluster dark, then I would suspect the pin closest to the center of the circuit board has become unsoldered. There is a single row of pins on the front (of the car) board that plugs into a socket on the rear board. The end pin carries the lamp current and an age relaxed socket spring causes connection resistance and the lamp current through it makes enough heat to unsolder the pin. Solder a short (6") piece of insulated hookup wire from the forward most (of the car) side of the board center most pin to the rear most side of the rear board socket and this won't happen ever again.
